It's like Hawaii in the 1900's before Hilton; no high rise at all. I stayed at a beach bungalow in Rarotonga and a luxury resort in Aitutaki but my favorite is the Islander Hotel by the airport in Rarotonga. It's rustic, seaside and open restaurant with chickens and cats roaming around. I was expecting Humphrey Bogart and the beautiful German spy Marelena Dietrich to show up at the bar.

It was Pedro Fenandez De Quiro a Portuguese Spainiard the first european who discovered the islands. He landed in Rakahanga in 1606. Captain James Cook arrived in 1773 and named the islands Hervey Islands. Fifty years later a Russian Admiral Adam Johann Von Krusenstern named the islands after James Cook. Which is the Cook Islands.
